Abstrak

Stories old and new contains short stories from some of our finest writers. It ranges form the mid-nineteenth century to our own day, and embraces writers from Britain, Ireland, Trinidad, Africa and New Zealand. The National Curriculum says that short stories should 'include a range of narrative structures and techniques'; 'extend pupils' ideas and their moral and emotional understanding; 'offer perspectives on society and community and their impact on the lives of individuals' and 'show the variety of language use in fiction'. Stories old and new has been compiled to do all these things. The book also aims to give readers opportunities to explore social and historical contexts of literature, to compare texts, and to use these explorations as the basis of lively, imaginative coursework assignments.
