Abstrak

The Concise Encyclopedia of Pragmatics, Second Edition, comprehensively describes the discipline of pragmatics, one of the youngest but increasingly important areas within the study of language. Pragmatics deals with the various ways human use (and misuse, or even abuse) language, and shows how the language users are subject to the conditions that society imposes on such use. A central notion in pragmatics is that of the pragmatic act, which comprises both the immediately intended use of language as we observe it in speech acting, as well as the implied meanings of a given idea imparted in speech.
