Cement is a seminal Socialist Realist novel by Soviet author Fyodor Gladkov, first published in 1925 and reissued in 1964 by the Moscow Literary Publishing House. Set in the aftermath of the Russian Civil War, the story follows Gleb Chumalov, a former Red Army soldier, who returns to his hometown to find both his personal life and his cement factory in disarray. His wife, Dasha, has become an active revolutionary leader, and the workers are struggling to rebuild the industrial plant under the ideals of the new Soviet society.
