Abstrak

This book examines four major literary modes. Each mode is identified as a set of characteristic themes, narrative types, and linguistic patterns that have commonly appeared together-devices widely used by large numbers of literary artists from the Middle Ages to the present. The chapters of the book were developed in a course in literature offered at Trinity College, Hartford. They have evolved from what began as duplicated sheets distributed to students along with regular assignments in novels, plays and poetry.
