Abstrak

This book reviews the story of Elizabeth Pisani who travels in Indonesia. Indonesia is rich, dynamic and often maddeningly awash with contradictions, Jakarta more than any other city on earth. 80 million Indonesians live without electricity and many communities still share in the ritual sacrifices. Declaring its independence in 1945, Indonesia declared it would 'work towards change. With more than 300 ethnic groups spread across 13,500 islands, it is the fourth most populous country in the world. More or less in Indonesia for twenty-five years, Elizabeth Pisani recently 26,000 miles around the archipelago. Funny experiences abound, Pisani sharing space or having cohabited with pigs and cows, going up and down a sulfur volcano, and fetching tea. Along the way, he observes a Man with a Child Bride, debating corruption and cannibalism. An unforgettable travel experience.
